Job Description
The Specialty Gas chemist will provide analysis of pure products and mixtures sold as specialty or electronic gases within the package gas division of Matheson. The chemist will maintain a safe work environment. The chemist will adhere to all Matheson published policies. The chemist will complete all safety and technical training in accordance with the schedule. The daily activities for the person in this laboratory will be to stage and organize cylinders for testing on one of the instrument stations while keeping the area free from clutter. The chemist needs to learn and understand established protocols for analysis of various species. Extensive cylinder handling is expected including but not limited to safe movement, connecting and disconnecting to analytical equipment and valve operation.
The Chemist will know the operation of the process analyzers, Gas Chromatographic Analyzers and Infrared analyzers in the designated laboratory. The chemist should know the basic operation of the instruments as well as the computer control system for these analyzers. The chemist will be able to generate necessary calibration curves and understand the requirements for the calibration curves. The chemist will know the basic specification requirements for each grade of product or mixture within the laboratory. The chemist will be able to determine the appropriate instrumentation and method for each sample cylinder as it comes into the laboratory. The chemist will know the requirements for the certificates of analysis and how they are to be filled out. Certificates of analysis will be filled in accurately and completely. The chemist is required to maintain instrumentation in their area so that it is functional for analysis. The chemist will use problem solving skills to work through an analysis obstacle which may be related to method development or analyzer issues.
The chemist is responsible for testing a minimum number of samples depending on the instrumentation. The chemist will be responsible for ensuring that test protocols are followed and cylinders effectively are passing. Chemist must do effective root cause analysis for cylinders that fail to meet specification to insure the instrumentation and data analysis process are robust and not the cause of the failures. This can include the review of calibration data, sample stability, and instrumentation failures.
The chemist is responsible for keeping the necessary logs and database up to date for tracking of cylinders through the laboratory. The chemist is responsible for filling out and maintaining the laboratory notebooks for each analysis. As these are shared resources they must sign and date the notebooks. The chemist is responsible for ensuring that any supplies needed for moving cylinders through the laboratory are in stock. The chemist will be responsible for staging work in this area on a daily basis to meet the minimum analysis requirements of the area so that cylinders move through in an efficient and timely manner.
The chemist will work with production and other laboratory personnel to effectively move test cylinders through the laboratory. Chemist must meet commitments for delivery dates. Once a schedule is in place it is the responsibility of the chemist to get that analysis completed. The chemist is responsible for pass thru certificates of analysis. The chemist will know how to use various software tools including but not limited to Chromperfect, Star, Galaxie, Omnic, Chemstation, Excel and CRM for data entry of cylinders.
